Reference photos used for this watercolor were taken in Girdwood, Alaska outside the Bake Shop. Every summer the Bake Shop has an outdoor eating area surrounded by dahlias and begonias in huge pots.
About Sharon Freeman
Sharon was a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and a juried member of the Southwest Washington Watercolor Society. Her watercolors have won awards in National and local competitions. Sharon�s paintings hang in public buildings in Washington State as well as hotels in Alaska. An article featuring Sharon�s watercolor techniques was published in the Artists� Magazine, October 2000 issue. See many more of Sharon's paintings on her website. �Watercolor is a means for me to celebrate nature. Trees, flowers, and water are a few elements that capture my imagination. I look for unique patterns within small areas of nature and try to emphasize them.

Sharon, you're an extraordinary watercolorist. I'm a beginner, teaching myself, and am looking at your work to see how you do shadows and indicate the folds in a flower petal. You do it beautifully and make it look easy. You inspire me to keep trying. I'm a fine art photographer and have shot flowers for years. I'm also a gardener and have grown dahlias in New England for a very long time so I really like your choice here of an olive-type green rather than the bright green for the leaves.You've also adjusted the background colors to complements the leaves. The orange cactus bloom has been rendered wonderfully. Thanks for the inspiration.
